Glittering Enchantment

Rufus in Hollywood

This marks the fifth time that I've seen Rufus Wainwright in concert this year alone. To call me (or us) obsessed could be fairly accurate. My iLike stats show that his music is all I've listened to in the last couple of weeks. With that said, I got home this morning from a very brief weekend trip to LA to see his final Judy show at the Hollywood Bowl.

Rufus Does Judy at the Bowl

If you recall, last June, SP and I went to New York to see Rufus do the very first Judy show at Carnegie Hall. We loved it. We loved it so much that earlier this year, when it was announced that he would be ending the "Judy Show Tour" at the Hollywood Bowl, we thought, yeah, wouldn't that be fun. And that was the last the I thought of it. SP, on the other hand, was far far more determined than I was, and just maybe a month ago, found two tickets to the show. So we booked a flight and were there.

It was pretty damn cool, to say the least. I had never been to the Bowl before, so that in itself was a treat, but to see Rufus do the show again, with his sister, Martha, his mom, Kate McGarrigle, and Lorna Luft reprising their roles from the show at Carnegie Hall made it all the more fun. And like a cherry on top, one of his encore numbers was "Get Happy" in his cute drag outfit just as he did during his "Release the Stars" tour. Lovely. Simply divine. There were celebrities in the audience, and it was very sweet when Rufus went into the front row to give Debbie Reynolds a kiss. We had fantastic seats, the sound was incredible, the weather, perfect, and a shooting star to add to the brilliance. Loved it.

And I am sooo glad to be back home. Walking around WeHo for just a day made me realize how extraordinary the Castro is. I've become a bit immune to the whole hubbub of the Castro with its diverse population of gays and lesbians, but seeing nothing but thin blond gay boys walking around everywhere started to give me a complex. And with that said, the Folsom Street Fair is next weekend, with an Erykah Badu concert on Saturday night. OMG. I need a vacation from all of these concerts! I just can't wait to sleep in my own bed again. I tell ya, just two nights away from home makes me homesick.
