Glittering Enchantment

Just so you know, the new T line of San Francisco's MUNI is cool, but boring. If you're curious to ride it, don't...unless you have two hours to kill. It's a cute little jaunt into part of SFO you don't see everyday, but really, that's all.

One of the first jobs I had in the city is right on Third Street. I was training to be a dispatch operator for a conglomerate of bicycle messenger companies. I lasted about three days I think...maybe just two. Hell, it could have been only one. I don't even remember. My boss was British, which is what attracted me initially, and their dispatch system was run on Macs, which attracted me even more, but something happened, I snapped, and one day, instead of showing up for work, I stayed at the Y and floated in the activity pool for about two hours before hitting the steam room. It was probably the first time I ever willingly avoided work, and it certainly wasn't my last. My boss was freaking out, H was freaking out. They all thought I got hit by a bus or something. OMG. Anyway.

So when the T line passed right by the old building, I was transported nine years in the past to the whole mess. I used to walk from that building to the Embarcadero YMCA on Steuart Street. "Used to," like I worked there for years. I probably only walked there twice. Whatever. Funny how memory distorts the timeline. That was before PacBell/SBC/AT&T park was completed. That was before any of China Basin was as built up as it is now, before the N line went all the way to CalTrain. Wow, memories.

I've lived in California for 17 years; I've lived in the Bay Area for nine years. Time flies.

I'm totally hooked on Regina Spektor. OMG, she's so darling.

SP came up on Saturday to see a show, as I think I mentioned. The Brazilian Girls are fun to listen to on me iPod, but in person, I was a little disappointed. Their music was so loud and overamplified, it was all distortion. I couldn't hear anything the girl was singing. And the end of their gig? Weird. She Wants Revenge, on the other hand, was pretty damn good. The venue was cute, we sat upstairs with a full on view of the stage the whole night. The crowd was kinda...never mind, no judging. It was young and straight. What are ya gonna do?
